The collapse of Afghanistan was inevitable once the Trump
administration decided to negotiate directly with the
Taliban, cutting out the Afghan government.

And it was inevitable that once collapse was perceived as
inevitable, that the US would not reverse course again and
decide to stay, then collapse would happen very quickly.
Once the winning side is clear, no Afghan wants to be the
last one to switch sides - Afghan history shows the fate
of the tardy.

That's what defeat looks like.   Unfortunately the Taliban
was right about one thing - the US supported a puppet
government that lacked enough popular support outside the
educated urban class.     Same as the Soviet-backed puppet
government that fell to the Taliban the first time around.

The only way to delay the inevitable was to maintain a
US military presence indefinitely.      Trump and Biden
agreed that time was up.      None of Biden's critics have
suggested a credible plan for getting everybody out without
triggering collapse.     Trump certainly didn't have one.

Better support for the Afghan air force would have delayed
the inevitable, but not for long.
