McCarthy is still trying and maybe he will make it -
for a while -

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/30/politics/kevin-mccarthy-house-speaker-race/index.html

 https://news.yahoo.com/calmes-kevin-mccarthy-anything-house-110019957.htmlhttps://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-speaker.html

But how long will he last if elected? Not long if he
makes any decisions or tries to lead on anything except
dialing for dollars in dark campaign money.

The most rational GOP member choice for getting things
done would be Brian Fitzpatrick -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brian_Fitzpatrick_(American_politician)

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Problem_Solvers_Caucus

He'd get no votes from the Freischütze-macht-Freiheit
caucus -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Freedom_Caucus

because their goal is to prevent things from getting done.
But they are going to vote against any Speaker as soon
as they don't get their way. But Fitzpatrick would get
some votes from problem-solving Democrats instead.

Saying one thing and doing the opposite is essential GOP
minority rule!

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

some Republicans believe McCarthy is privately rooting
for the omnibus bill to pass, even though he plans to vote
against it publicly

 https://cnn.com/2022/12/13/politics/kevin-mccarthy-mitch-mcconnell-collision-course/index.html

And while some want to solve the nation's problems,

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-speaker.html

others just want to solve their problem of getting on Fox
and connecting with megadonors. McCarthy's good for
the latter. So is McConnell.

Republicans are simply out of touch with the values of a
significant part of the electorate

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/09/opinion/republicans-midterms-abortion.html

GOP, depending as it does on pro-lifers being single-issue
voters that can be captured with that issue, miscalculated
how many pro-choice voters are also single-issue - and GOP
thought they could sway them into voting against inflation
and crime.

Or perhaps they added up all their single-issue
constituencies -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

pro-lifers, free-fire enthusiasts, election deniers,
immigration opponents, QAnons, Christian nationalists,
white supremacists, and fascists, to get impressive
numbers, but forgot that they were counting many of the
same people over and over - so those voters didn't add up
to as big a red wave as GOP expected.

We must start saying what we are for

As in Scott’s release of an 11-point plan early this
year, which called for a modest tax increase for many
of the lowest-paid Americans, while opening the door for
cutting Social Security and Medicare ?

It's good to be honest, but there's a reason GOP don't
talk about their real agenda -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

If you’re going to make this about assessing blame for
losing an election, I don’t know how the NRSC chairman
gets off the hook

He doesn't, and didn't, and won't.

 https://apnews.com/article/florida-mitch-mcconnell-congress-3592c4d35d125619d935f09b1d00dc5e

McConnell is the money man from the donors to the
candidates. And he's not hoping to run for president.

 https://apnews.com/article/florida-mitch-mcconnell-congress-9f1be1d3635127dbb3e17a3fae1ac86d

And he had the votes, just as he said.

Liz Cheney for Speaker? Or Mike Pence? How about Evan
McMullin?

 https://liberalandlovingit.substack.com/p/liz-cheney-for-speaker

Why not? They stood up against Trump and personality
cult, and for rule of law, when it mattered most.

If the Democrats end up a minority in the House, some of
them might be willing to support a non-Trumpist from the
GOP for Speaker.

Anybody can be Speaker. A non-member Speaker can't vote.
One might not be able to keep all supporters singing the
same tune but maybe could keep them talking to each other.
It would force the GOP members to start talking to each
other long enough to get their own act together and elect
somebody else. No easy task when it's so close to 50-50
that all 435 members have veto power.

The tossups NV-1,3,4 were just called for Democrats.

At this point, it sounds like McCarthy's best bet is to
hope to have one LESS than a majority. Then nobody
will bother trying to replace him as (minority) leader.

GOP likes to talk about how bad global inflation is,
rather than what Congress could actually do about it,
that isn't already being done. Aside, or course, from
the usual GOP cures for everything -

- extending job creator billionaire tax cuts

- entitlement reform - privatizing, cutting back, or
eliminating social security and medicare

Not to mention cracking down on violent crime by trying to
release all the political prisoner Jan 6 insurrectionists.

All in their service of minority rule -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

But all that depends on their taking time out long enough
from competing to control the direction of Trumpism
and whether to shut down the government and default on
its debt.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/11/20/democrats-republicans-trump-pence-sunday-shows/

The new class of GOP legislators might not agree with
all that, but they will soon learn to vote as they are
told if they want to get megadonor funding in the next
primary. Nothing bipartisan that might look like giving
the Democrats a win - Trump, DeSantis, and McCarthy all
agree on that.

==

GOP control of the next House might be even narrower than
Democrats' current margin of 5 votes. CA-13 is still
not called, with a difference of 860 votes -

 https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/11/02/just-an-hour-from-silicon-valley-this-tight-race-could-tilt-con#PS1gop

CO-3 will get a recount, AK will be decided by ranked
choice, and CA-3 and CA-22 also haven't been called.

And in the Senate, GA gets a runoff and AK will be decided
by ranked choice.

Believe what the Republicans are saying now?

Abortion?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/10/27/abortion-laws-exceptions-polling/

Even if it's different from what they said during the
primaries? They might change their minds again once
in office.

Anti-semitism?

incidents have risen because there is less shame. People
feel they can say and do anything

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/religion/2022/10/27/antisemitism-kanye-trump-adidas-jews/

Trump and Trumpists set the example of acting on impulse
and ignorance, ignoring laws and precedents they don't
like.

What do GOP candidates WANT to talk about ? Inflation,
taxes, and crime -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/interactive/2022/political-ads/

and though they don't have any new clues about reducing
inflation and crime -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/10/24/opinion/rising-crime-democrats.html

they sure know how to reduce taxes for job creator
billionaire megadonors! That's inflationary, except in
voodoo math.

For everybody else, it's entitlement reform - meaning
privatize, abolish, or cut back on Social Security,
Medicare, Obamacare, and Medicaid. Even if they have
to shut down the government and default on its obligations!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/27/republican-midterm-debates-abortion-trump/

And rigged elections to protect minority rule forever!

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

At least the GOP is coming out of the closet about what
they really believe, instead of the traditional approach of
saying one thing in public to the voters and the opposite
in private to the megadonors.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

They are counting on their base being used to voting
GOP without a second thought, no matter what they say in
campaigns or do once in office.

It's good to see that GOP leaders are finally getting
SPECIFIC about what they'll do when they gain power.
So often they talk one way in private to megadonors,
another way to the Trump base in primaries, and a third
way to swing voters in the general election -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

But then Rick Scott led the way toward more transparency -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/03/31/us/politics/rick-scott.html

but was encouraged to shut up about tax increases and
benefit cuts for poor people - at least until the election
was won.

GOP must be feeling more confident now since they are
talking louder about tax cuts for job creators - GOP-speak
for their megadonors -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2022/10/17/republicans-tax-trump-biden/

And more are speaking up about entitlement reform -
GOP-speak for privatizing, eliminating, or shrinking
Federal social welfare programs - Social Security,
Medicare, Medicaid, Obamacare. They will go for any
reform that does not increase taxes on their job creators.
Privatization might be the best bet, because that presents
a profit opportunity for their Wall Street megadonors.
Wouldn't any ordinary voter prefer an anonymous Wall Street
bureaucrat to an anonymous DC bureaucrat? Especially
after the 2008-2009 recession!

 https://about.bgov.com/news/entitlement-spending-cap-plans-linked-by-gop-to-debt-limit-deal/

And the best part, to get what they want, many GOP House
members are can't wait to shut down the government and
the global economy - in order to save America!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/10/18/gop-debt-ceiling-plan-financial-crisis-recession/

The Freischütz-macht-Freiheit Caucus doesn't have to be
a majority within House GOP - just enough to block a GOP
majority in the whole House, if it tries to be rational
or bipartisan.

We've seen this movie before -

 https://www.get-to-sixty.net/

But this time it looks like there will be more crazies
and they will be crazier.

Honesty is the best policy - there's less to remember that
way - but it doesn't work for GOP candidates.

They have to say one thing in private to their megadonors -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

and something else in public to the Trump base for the
primary - and then something different in public to swing
voters in the general.

What happens if the GOP wins control of Congress in the
2022 election? Who's going to call the shots?

Trumpists?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#trump

Revisionist Trumpists?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#revisionist

Traditional Republicans?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

Rule-of-Law Republicans?

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#rule-of-law

They won't say what their platform is they don't have one
because they can't agree on one. And they won't have
a big enough majority to push anything past a Democratic
filibuster or a Biden veto anyway. For that matter,
they won't even have enough to pass a budget without
appeasing the Freedom Caucus, who'd love to shut everything
down again.

So a GOP Congress will do what it does best - nothing
- except actively blocking all Democratic initiatives
regardless of merit. People who love to complain about
a do-nothing Congress will have two years of bliss.

GOP will continue to block judicial nominations until they
get Trump or another Trumpist back in the White House in
2024 to send along more minority rule defenders groomed
by the Federalist Society.

In the time before the next election in 2024, they don't
have any method for dealing with inflation except what
the Fed is already doing, risking recession They
will piously intone about the Federal deficit until you
ask them which part of their 2017 billionaire tax relief
they'd like to repeal.

Where would Reagan - or Eisenhower - or Theodore Roosevelt
- or Lincoln fit in? Who's a Republican In Name Only?

Another traditional Republican unclear on the concept of
the Trumpist Dixiecrat cult of personality.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

If we want the American public to take us seriously, we
need to take the first step by nominating candidates they
should take seriously. That process goes beyond celebrity
or fame. It requires leaders capable of winning elections
by articulating a conservative vision for governing.

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/10/06/opinions/herschel-walker-scandal-georgia-senate-gop-duncan/index.html

That's what the megadonors want to hear, in private -
tax cuts and deregulation for billionaires, etc. It's not
what the Trumpist base cares about or wants to hear about.

It's not your grandfather's GOP. Now it's ALL about
celebrity and fame rather than governing. Trumpists
can all agree on the importance of celebrity and fame.
They can't agree on much about governing, so they leave
that to the megadonors to prescribe.

Trumpism is all about loyalty rather than competence.
Nobody ever accused Walker of disloyalty to Trump.
Of course, when you run a country that way, you can get
in trouble, as Putin discovered in Ukraine.

Seeing all this, traditional Republicans are retiring
in droves.

Trumpism - and even traditional GOP minority rule -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

depend on co-opting single-issue constituencies to protect
minority rule. Right-to-lifers, free-fire advocates,
anti-vaxxers, anti-maskers, anti-Castro, KKK, Nazis...
What's next - incels? They'd vote straight GOP.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2022/09/22/incels-rape-murder-study/

But for today it's QAnon -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/09/23/trump-qanon-song/

The megadonors want their GOP politicians to cultivate
all these constituencies to the bare minimum to keep
them motivated to go to the polls and vote GOP, while
avoiding cultivating them enough to repel independent
and swing voters. This is a very delicate dance, and
they may have misjudged the patriarchalists, who given one
victory on abortion, redouble their demands for more - to
repeal everything depending on an imputed right to privacy,
much to the alarm of the majority of voters.

So for QAnon, his handlers allow him to play QAnon songs
and wear QAnon tokens, but not to EXPLICITLY affirm
any QAnon delusions, so as not to give Democrats any
ammunition to use with persuadable voters. Of course,
Trump being Trump, who knows what he might say next on the
spur of the moment? That's why the GOP megadonors
might eventually decide Trump is too risky an investment -
compared to DeSantis, who they might hope knows when to
follows the script and stay on message.

Minority rule redux - what happens if the party base
nominates a candidate with no chance in the general
elections?

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/22/politics/trump-threaten-democracy-nyt-siena-college-poll/index.html

Fix the general election and find enough votes? Or go
the way of the Whigs - the GOP dissolves into a fascist
Trumpist Dixiecrat branch and a traditional conservative
branch, that bicker and shrink until a new party can
proclaim an intellectually and morally respectable
conservative ideology.

It's all up to the GOP megadonors - who they choose to
fund will make all the difference. They are just out
to protect their minority rule, so to that end they can
promote or discard candidates as they see fit.

Why do GOP candidates keep talking about privatizing
Social Security and Medicare (and abolishing Medicaid and
Obamacare)? After 2008, do any voters really believe
that they are better off with anonymous Wall Street
bureaucrats running their insurance, versus anonymous
DC bureaucrats running their insurance? Any large
insurance program is going to pay for a large bureaucracy -
to keep costs under control!

 https://www.politico.com/news/2022/09/22/republican-candidates-social-security-medicare-00058158

It's because so many GOP candidates, especially Trumpists,
are new to politics and don't understand that GOP success
depends on saying one thing to the voters - and doing
nothing - and saying the opposite to the megadonors -
and doing it. Thus reducing Federal spending
is popular with many voters who don't understand that
it's code for privatizing or eliminating Social Security
and Medicare. But the megadonors understand.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

And that you often say one thing to the GOP base in the
primary and the opposite to the rest of the voters in the
general election.

 https://www.axios.com/2022/08/31/republicans-midterms

But these confusions and inadvertent admissions are what
you expect from inexperienced Reality-TV candidates chosen
by a Reality-TV (ex-) president.

If the GOP retakes the House, they'll do what they always
do - reinforce minority rule politically -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

and economically -

 https://www.one-flat-tax.net/

Of course, that's a platform for doing, for the megadonors,
not a platform for talking, for the voters -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

But McCarthy has a platform for the voters!

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/09/22/politics/house-republicans-midterm-mccarthy/index.html

It avoids specifics of course. The hypocrisy is
getting to be too much for McConnell, however, who just
says America will find out his program AFTER GOP takes
over the Senate.

Two kinds of Republicans -

Trumpists who believe that all you have to do is appeal

Others who believe that you have to appeal to swing voters

GOP senator Susan Collins is a poor judge of GOP character.
She thought Trump's first impeachment would teach him a

Not the lesson she thought.

Then she believed Kavanaugh that Roe was settled law.
Surprise! The Federalist Society only nominates
candidates who will support minority rule.

What's really going on this week?

The GOP major donor class hit two home runs this week
to protect minority rule. But they don't really care
about abortion rights - they can afford to go to Denmark
like their forebears. Any rural DA who thinks he can
prosecute rich white men the same as poor colored women
will have a learning experience at the next primary.
And the donor class doesn't really care about gun safety -
they can afford private security.

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/23/politics/rick-scott-rescue-america-plan-gop/index.html

What they do care about is tax cuts for billionaires and
benefit decreases for poor people. That's not a very
popular political platform, as Rick Scott discovered when
he blurted out the truth - nobody ever got elected on it.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

So they have to campaign on something else - and
single-issue voters form several pillars of minority rule.
Accommodate those voters on their single issue and they
don't care about your real agenda. The two biggest -
right-to-life and right-to-shoot.

The GOP doesn't have a clue how to control inflation.
They can't fix China's covid policies or undo the damage
to Ukraine. So they won't say what they'd do instead.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/05/19/republicans-have-no-plan-to-lower-inflation-prices/

But we know the answer. They'll blame the Democrats
when they are out of power and they'll blame the Democrats
when they are in power.

And the GOP will then quietly get back to the top priority
of their major donors, billionaire job creator tax relief.

Fantasy politics really started in 1619,

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/1619/

and was a staple of Dixiecrat politics

 https://www.facebook.com/politicalscrapbooknet/posts/1665816050429574

from around 1820

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Missouri_Compromise

to around 1970,

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/history/interactive/2022/george-wallace-trump-white-anger/?itid=hp-top-table-main

when the Dixiecrats migrated to and eventually took over
the Republican Party.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

So did GOP acceptance of voodoo economics lead to GOP
acceptance of replacement theory?

 https://greeleytribune.net/from-voodoo-economics-to-maga-buffalo-mass-shooting/

Not likely - the poison was already fermenting well
before Reagan.

All in on culture wars!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2022/05/10/gop-culture-wars-midterms-biden/

If there's no constitutional right to privacy - then
abortion, birth control, same-sex marriage, can all
be criminalized. The Franz von Papens who thought
they could control Trump then, think they can control the
reactionaries  now.     Now they do whatever Trump says;
tomorrow they do whatever the reactionaries say.

Pro-life is not the essence of GOP's long-term reactionary
judge campaign, led by Leonard Leo and Mitch McConnell.
It's a helpful side influencer for the voter base, but the
real goal is reactionary decisions on taxes, deregulation,
campaign finance, and voter suppression, to protect the
major campaign donors. Same for 2nd Amendment.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html

But conservatives who should know better can still be
fooled, just like the voter base.

The really critical split ahead in American politics is not
between Republicans and Democrats. The Republicans
will likely win control of Congress, mostly by blaming
Biden for inflation due to Putin and covid.

But that will force the real issue out of the closet -
who ARE The Republicans? How much unity do they
really have? The modern Dixiecrat GOP is unified in
preserving minority rule -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

but to what end?

Is GOP a cult of personality?
 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#trump

A front for the wealthy major political donor class?

Or a force for rule of law?

Was Donald Trump the exception, or will Joe Biden be the
exception?”

Lindbergh America-First Republicans that react too late?

Or defenders of western Enlightenment ideals that react
in time?

Rick Scott thinks his brand of traditional conservatism +
Trumpism is a mass movement. McConnell knows better -
Trumpism in public for the voters, traditional conservatism
in private for the donors.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

But Scott isn't shy about his agenda, and Democrats aren't
shy about his agenda either. Expect to hear a lot about
it from both. But Scott feels entitled to win - he's the
richest man in the Senate.

Did somebody forget that you're not supposed to talk about
the real agenda in public to voters?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/03/11/yes-voters-deserve-know-this-gop-plan-would-raise-taxes-by-1-trillion/

Only in private to major donors!

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-credos.html#gop

And Scott's in charge of the 2022 GOP Senate campaigns!

 https://www.msn.com/en-in/news/world/mcconnell-rebukes-scott-over-his-11-point-plan-that-includes-a-tax-hike-on-the-poorest-families-that-will-not-be-a-part-of-the-republican-senate-agenda/ar-AAUtLlY

Make it a referendum, not a choice! McConnell says it's
not the GOP agenda - but looking at what they tried and
accomplished in 2017-2019, it's exactly the agenda they'll
enact if they can. As McConnell says, you never get
in trouble by keeping your mouth shut.

We will not have as part of our agenda a bill that raises
taxes on half of the American people and sunsets Social
Security and Medicare within five years

That's GOP McConnell talking about GOP Scott!

 https://apnews.com/article/2022-midterm-elections-business-seniors-doug-ducey-election-2020-e126709accd4405525db65b2d876584f

Of course, that is exactly what the actual GOP plan is -
but they're only supposed to talk about it in private to
donors, not in public to voters just before an election.

Scott joins Trump in the Democrats' secret weapon
stockpile.

McConnell and Trump trade more shots -

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/09/politics/mitch-mcconnell-violent-insurrection/index.html

Pence got a lot of positive feedback from GOP leaders and
donors - in private -

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/09/politics/pence-trump-rebuke-response/index.html

Most GOP voters side with Pence over Trump - but that can
be fixed with enough dark money -

 https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/09/politics/electoral-count-act-pence-poll/index.html

But how many leaders have the courage to stand up and
explicitly and forcefully and publicly say that Trump and
Trumpism is the past and GOP needs to find a different
future? Not many so far.

As freedom comes under attack in our schools it’s
imperative that the next generation ensures the advancement
of pro-America ideas

Freedom under attack in schools? Like a mob of
thousands of armed lunatics physically attacking the
Capitol? Or like a mob of armed lunatics verbally
attacking school boards for allowing the teaching of the
truth about American history?

First pro-America ideal to advance - the rule of law!
First anti-America ideal to denounce - the cult of
personality!

Pence has done his bit on a couple of occasions but
now is reverting to form, trying to revive his Trumpist
credentials by repeating Trumpist dogma.

 https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/02/07/mike-pence-to-take-on-woke-left-in-stanford-speech-but-will-he-talk-about-trump/

Sorry Mr Pence - the violent insurrection is all of a
piece with the rest of the Trumpist dogma. That's how
cult of personality works. Either you're all in or
you're all out. And underneath all the media noise,
the quiet underlying goal is protecting minority rule.
