Hamas has achieved a great strategic victory by combining

Hamas has achieved its victory goal of preventing peace in
the mideast for another generation.  The only immediate
losers were the people of Palestine and the people of
Israel, but collateral losses of economic and political
opportunities forgone are apt to be much greater over time.

Their Iranian sponsors should be even more pleased,
having  derailed their greatest fear, the emerging
West+Israel+Sunni alliance against Iran - all at negligible
cost to Iran.

Hamas may well believe that Palestinians thank them, or
should thank them,  for the opportunity to serve as holy
martyrs, protecting Hamas with the bodies of their families
and businesses.    But Palestinians should consider the
weight of historical evidence that violent revolutionaries
do not change  when they achieve their initial goals, but
instead find new goals to apply their well-homed skills.

And thousands of years of history in the area suggest
that small nations that ally with bigger ones often wish
they hadn't,

But motivated terrorists can overcome technology - for
a while.

Hamas has achieved its strategic goals, and those of its
Iranian sponsors, of killing the Israel-Saudi convergence
against Iran.    From the Iranian point of view, that's
worth any number of Palestinian martyrs.   Hamas agrees.

Israel is determined that's the last success Hamas will
ever have.    Israel knows that if Hamas is given any
chance to survive and strike back - it will.   So no
cease-fire until victory.   It's not unlike the issue of
prisoner exchange in the Civil War -
