There is such a thing as free will! And repentance -
recognizing the devil's work, and turning away from it
before becoming permanently tarred with sin.

Joy shall be in heaven over one sinner that repenteth,
more than over ninety and nine just persons, which need
no repentance.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/12/23/cassidy-hutchinson-trump-jan-6-perjury/

As for Passantino and the others who embraced the devil's
tar baby of their own free will - and might be pleading
the devil made me do it -

For it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that
man by whom the offence cometh!

Even Fox stars can repent from fear of perjury -

The pandemic was the icing on the cake.

 https://www.mercurynews.com/2022/11/20/doomsday-scenario-for-sinking-bay-area-transit-no-weekend-bart-bus-lines-cancelled-or-a-taxpayer-bailout/

But the main mass transit issue has been around forever
- it can, or could, break even during the morning and
evening rush. But mid-day, owl, and weekend service
has to be subsidized by taxpayers to break even.

Young, poor, and elderly rely on subsidized mid-day service
to get around.

Like everybody else, transit workers don't want split
shifts, so they end up working mid-day at a loss.
It's the same problem as the restaurant business - not
enough profitable to do mid-morning and mid-afternoon.

Everybody who drives to work during rush hour benefits
from mass transit, to the extent that it takes vehicles
off the road. But nobody wants to pay for that benefit.

America's founders counted on citizen virtue as well as
institutions to uphold their Enlightenment ideals -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-enlightenment.html

“To suppose that any form of government will secure
liberty or happiness without any virtue in the people,
is a chimerical idea” - Madison

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/11/04/opinion/paul-pelosi-youngkin-lake.html

Even hypocritical display of virtuous forms preserves the
possibility of return to actual virtue - unlike the brute
display of naked self- and tribal interest.

Time to get rid of the twice-yearly clock change. It's
bad for health. But which time zone to adopt year-round?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2022/11/01/daylight-saving-end-standard-time-permanent/

Perhaps that's best left up to states. As it is, daylight
time only works in temperate zones; near the equator the
seasons don't change enough to bother; near the poles,
a one-hour shift isn't nearly enough. So Alaska and
Hawaii have never bothered.

East-west travelers still have to contend with time
zones and clock changes. Would using universal time
throughout the country help? Astronomers, pilots,
and meteorologists - everybody who has to deal with the
actual round world - are used to that. It would mean
that in North America, the date would changed in the
late afternoon or evening. The standard business hours
would be 1400-2200 on the east coast and 1700-0100 on the
west coast.

Essence and accident - ideological fossilization in
ancient traditions.

When studying the reflection of the Enlightenment in
Freemasonry -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-enlightenment.html

and the modern decline of fraternal orders - it becomes
apparent that a recurring theme is tension between the
essence of a tradition and the historical accidents of
its creation -

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masonic_ritual_and_symbolism

Likewise the current ferment in the Roman Catholic Church
reflects a similar tension -

 https://apnews.com/article/pope-francis-religion-99c56be791c4c2f20694e66d01c6d50e

And in India, as in America, it's the same tension - is
America, or India, defined by a universal idea and ideal?
Or defined by accidents of birth and creed?

 https://apnews.com/article/religion-india-holidays-nationalism-d851b8fcabb9eb0f3946275fdf596322

Most - but not all - of America's founders had very
definite ideas about that -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2022-enlightenment.html

Most ancient traditions embody a kernel of eternal
truth, and a husk of historical accident. The more
intellectually-minded participants might respond to the
eternal truth; those more inclined to the familiarity
of habit might respond to the historical accidents and
consider them to be the eternal truth. As one gets
older, it's harder to let go of the convictions that
sustained one so far, no matter the cost to the tradition
as newer generations abandon it.

We see the same dynamic in American politics - the contrast
between those for whom America IS the Enlightenment ideals
of its founders, and those clinging to historical accidents
as sacred writ -

 https://www.reduce-rural-bias.net/

Ruling classes and self-serving opportunists in politics
have exploited these tensions to confuse the masses -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#political%20ideology%20for%20the%20masses

for political and economic gain -

Security is a way of life - and 60 years ago, at least,
armed Army officers in uniform carried handcuffed secret
briefing materials on commercial flights to NATO meetings
in Europe. Made toilet breaks awkward.

 https://apnews.com/article/florida-donald-trump-mar-a-lago-congress-government-and-politics-6916af6f47be5ddbe0f30f428736daaf

It's a way of life diametrically opposed to the way most
politicians think and operate, and even more so to the
ways of reality-TV stars.

thrice a day meals must be eaten and digested: thrice a
century a new generation must be engendered

 https://www.bartleby.com/157/3.html

But animals have the same needs. What distinguishes
humans?

death above all, make them slaves of reality

Consciousness of death has led men to seek immortality of
some kind -

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/07/07/opinion/mass-shooters-motive.html

Most women have the option of bearing children. It's no
coincidence that mass killers of strangers are almost
always men. Although most spiritual traditions emphasize
humility and disregard for worldly success, the desire
for immortality seems - immortal. Roman emperors
announced that they were immortal gods - and then died like
everybody else. How many can you name? What's worse
than being dead? Being forgotten!

And now we have our secular culture that embraces celebrity
in all forms - from sports and entertainment stars to
social media influencers to presidents. No wonder some
of the losers in the fame and fortune game pick up guns to
set things straight. It's not insanity. The insanity
is the celebrity culture that breeds them. #PS1firearms

Most rich people own medium-sized businesses. That's why
the tax system rewards them - they are rich enough to
afford major political donations.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2022/05/14/opinion/sunday/rich-happiness-big-data.html

But they aren't that much happier than everybody else.
The secret of happiness - Be with your love, on an
80-degree and sunny day, overlooking a beautiful body of
water, having sex. It’s a lot easier than owning an
auto dealership.

On this day when thousands of mothers in Ukraine and

We, women of one country, will be too tender of those
of another country, to allow our sons to be trained to

The Englishman described me as being expelled from Heaven

As with every form of prostitution, when church and state
lie together, both are degraded.

Trump is merely the embodiment of many of the raw wounds
that already existed in parts of the white evangelical
world: misogyny, racism, racial obliviousness, celebrity
worship, resentment and the willingness to sacrifice
principle for power.

Power is the core problem here. First, the corruptions of
personal power. Evangelicalism is a populist movement. It
has no hierarchy or central authority, so you might think
it would have avoided the abuses of power that have
afflicted the Roman Catholic Church. But the paradox
of decentralization is that it has often led to the
concentration of power in the hands of highly charismatic
men, who can attract enthusiastic followings.

In 2020, roughly 40 percent of the people who called
themselves evangelical attended church once a year or
less, according to research by the political scientist
Ryan Burge. It’s just a political label for them.

There can probably be no evangelical renewal if the
movement does not divorce itself from the lust for partisan
political power.

Excerpts from the official Virginia 7th-grade history book
from 1957.

That text is now a rare book with copies in a few
university libraries. Whatever happened to the tens
of thousands of copies printed? It inadvertently
anticipated, by 62 years, the New York Times 1619 project

by devoting quite a few pages to the events of the year
1619 - slavery, the first colonial legislature, the arrival
of a large number of single women - which did indeed mark
the founding of the Virginia Colony as an ongoing concern.

The red (and sometimes blue) wave of inexperienced school
board members - many accepted campaign funds from national
reactionary donors.

They'll find that budgets, taxes, union negotiations,
and compliance with state and federal law are hard work
and most will burn out soon, leaving a mess for somebody
else to clean up.
