Conspiracy theories? Why not at least make up plausible
ones? Such as, why isn't the acting attorney general,
whoever he is today, taking time off from drafting his
resignation letter to get to the bottom of the SCANDALOUS
Democratic scheme to pay Giuliani and Powell to make Trump
and Republicans look RIDICULOUS? Don't say Republicans can
do that to themselves without anybody's help, because every
Republican will tell you that every Democrat's approach
is to invent a problem and throw taxpayer money at it.

The question Romney (and all the Lincoln Project and
never-Trumpers) need to ask themselves:

What is it that they don't like about minority rule?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/12/21/romney-isnt-yet-there-he-should-consider-new-party/

Trumpism is the logical evolution of minority rule from
Strom Thurmond.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

Especially when demographics are increasingly against you,
you can't maintain minority rule by playing fair or being
logical or honest. The major donors that minority rule
protects aren't interested in funding the undermining of
that rule.

And once the crazies control the party, they don't get
saner, they just get crazier - look at the California and
Texas and Georgia GOP.

==

If the non-crazies want to start over with a new caucus
or a new party, it should not be on the basis of defending
minority rule -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#conservative

 https://www.liberty-and-justice.net/

They'll have to figure out how to build a movement
without most of the usual Republican donors and without
a significant starting base of voters. Their efforts
contributed to the defeat of Trump - by only 43,000 votes -
but Trumpism was victorious anyway.

Why do we have perpetual continuing resolution and budget
ceiling crises?

 https://www.get-to-sixty.net/

It might seem to be a bug in the system, but it's
intentional. While politicians make pious noises
about controlling the debt, that's just a subterfuge.
The debt will go up or down regardless. Departments will
get budgeted sooner or later. So why isn't continuing
budgeting AUTOMATIC until a new budget is approved, and
why is there a debt ceiling law?

 https://www.rollcall.com/2020/12/18/congress-to-take-up-two-day-cr-ahead-of-midnight-funding-deadline

All they do is create a crisis atmosphere in which
legislation gets passed at breakneck speed against a
looming deadline, before most legislators have a chance
to look at it, much less understand it. That's bad
government, right? WRONG! It's how the sausage gets
made. If you need to carry a bill for a major donor,
the LAST thing you want is a calm deliberate discussion in
the clear light of day. Most would get shot down.
Instead you sneak a non-germane clause late at night into a
huge must-pass bill with an imminent deadline. You can't
do that yourself, of course, but your colleagues on the
committee will agree to look the other way, because they
have their own critical clauses, and they don't want you
to slow things down by raising procedural objections.

The debt ceiling is currently on hold - but they'll
be back.

 https://www.cbsnews.com/news/whats-in-the-budget-deal-negotiated-by-congress-and-the-white-house/

They are not mechanisms for limiting wasteful government
spending, but for enabling wasteful government spending
for programs that wouldn't survive calm scrutiny.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_debt_ceiling

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Continuing_resolution

If you can't sneak it into a continuing resolution or
a debt limit resolution, you can try to get it into a
general appropriation bill. For instance today's

 https://apnews.com/article/ap-top-news-pat-toomey-coronavirus-pandemic-75064ab1007dde0a1411c204df83e888

 https://apnews.com/article/congress-900-billion-coronavirus-bill-75389549d3eaf2f3828b16d45c9706e6

5593 pages have these essential added ingredients -

"The final agreement would be the largest spending
measure yet. It combined COVID-19 relief with a $1.4
trillion government-wide funding plan and lots of other
unrelated measures on taxes, health, infrastructure and
education. That measure was likely to provide a last
$1.4 billion installment for Trump¢s U.S.-Mexico border
wall as a condition of winning his signature.

The bill was an engine to carry much of Capitol Hill's
unfinished business, including an almost 400-page water
resources bill that targets $10 billion for 46 Army Corps
of Engineers flood control, environmental and coastal
protection projects. Another addition would extend a batch
of soon-to-expire tax breaks, including one for craft
brewers, wineries and distillers. The end-of-session
rush also promised relief for victims of shockingly steep
surprise medical bills, a phenomenon that often occurs when
providers drop out of insurance company networks."

And Trump saved the three-martini lunch!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/us-policy/2020/12/20/meal-tax-deduction/

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/12/21/why-republicans-demanded-tax-break-business-lunches/

No doubt every member carefully considered every aspect
of each of these add-ons!

Who's going to be in charge of the Republican Party?

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/12/16/trump-mcconnell-election-biden-president/

The big donor money is likely on McConnell. He's a
quiet cannon, not a loose noisy one.

Anybody for semi-secession?

Look at the electoral map. It seems that there are two
countries now - a red one in the middle, a blue one on the
west coast and the northeast and maybe the upper midwest.
It's evident now that the Trumpists will go anywhere and
pay any price -

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/trump-election-video/2020/12/02/f6c8d63c-34e8-11eb-a997-1f4c53d2a747_story.html

 https://wethepeopleconvention.org/articles/WTPC-Urges-Limited-Martial-Law

to preserve the noble cause of minority rule before it's
lost -

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/2020-minority.html

In response, how about semi-secession to clarify
the thinking of the red states about minority rule?
Trump wanted to make the unthinkable thinkable, and how
he has succeeded, and how much more his successor.

So blue states that are so inclined create regional
interstate legislative assemblies, that act as debate
and negotiation forums to draft model legislation for
each participating state, to be enacted by that state's
legislature. Each state entering the assembly agrees to
enact all model legislation endorsed by a supermajority
of the regional assembly. There might be one for the
west coast, one for the mid-Atlantic and New England,
and perhaps one for the upper Midwest.

There's nothing unconstitutional or illegal about that.
Nothing is mandatory at the regional level; there is
no enforcement or taxation at that level. Instead,
like-minded states cooperate more intentionally toward
common goals like common state taxation schemes and
environmental policies. The regional assemblies could be
thought of as uniform act activities involving a limited
number of states

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uniform_act

rather than an interstate compact which would require
Congressional approval, which the red states would
withhold.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_compact

At the Federal level, representatives of the regional
assembly states become the biggest states-rights advocates
ever - voting against Federal spending and taxation as
the opportunity permits. When the subsidies stop flowing
from the blue states to the red states, we'll see if the
"states rights" advocates for slavery, then
segregation, then suppression of voters, really believe in
states rights when it comes to their pocketbooks. There is
only one Silicon Valley, one Wall Street, one Hollywood.
True there is only one Permian Basin, but there are lots
of global suppliers of cheap hydrocarbons to burn, and the
regional assembly states would be leading the charge away
from burning hydrocarbons anyway. If after all that,
the red states still feel they would be better off by
themselves, maybe it's time to let that happen. It didn't
work for the red states last time because the Confederacy
was a feudal agrarian economy that was fast falling behind
the rest of the developed world. If that's the noble
lost cause they want to recover, let them have their own
private fantasy world of magical thinking and faith in the
divine right of kings. Time for the red states to get
off welfare and stand on their own - as somebody else's
natural resources and food colonies! The ultimate dream
of Trumpism and minority rule realized at last!

What is the positive Democratic message that unites all
Americans?

How about

The Democratic Party is the REAL DEAL party that dares to
REALLY work for good health and good jobs for ALL Americans

in order to DELIVER - the forgotten promises Trump's 2016
campaign made to forgotten Americans, by means of bubble-up
economics from the bottom 99% instead of trickle-down
voodoo economics from the top 1%.

as opposed to

The Republican Party is the PRETEND DEAL party that dares
to PRETEND to work for ALL Americans, but REALLY works to
protect the power of its elite 1% ruling class of donors

in order to DELIVER -

billionaire tax relief, deregulation of corruption
and pollution and monopolies, neutered organized
labor, as few people allowed to vote as possible,
reactionary judges to protect all their deceit

How do these things make life better for forgotten
Americans?

==

William Jennings Bryan - a Trumpist before his time in
many ways - actually said it best -

"There are two ideas of government. There are those
who believe that, if you will only legislate to make the
well-to-do prosperous, their prosperity will leak through
on those below. The Democratic idea, however, has been
that if you legislate to make the masses prosperous, their
prosperity will find its way up through every class which
rests upon them."

==

There are three single-issue constituencies among the
pillars of Republican minority rule -

firearms right-to-life Castro and normalization of
relations with Cuba

It would be best to leave those issues to be addressed,
or not, in each district. Making them pillars of the
national Democratic platform is just a gift to Republicans.

There are three fear issues that the Republicans manipulate
to their advantage -

fear of lawlessness fear of immigration voter fraud

The Democratic national message must emphasize bringing
the rule of law to insure safe streets, orderly legal
immigration, and orderly elections, while leaving the
details to be addressed appropriately in each district,
and noting that the Republican ruling class NEEDS urban
unrest to distract voters and NEEDS illegal immigration to
supply exploitable workers and NEEDS voter fraud - in the
form of voter suppression - to maintain its hold on power.

==

The national message must be broad enough to encompass
the whole party and appeal to all persuadable voters,
yet the details have to be worked out to make a winning
package in each state and district. Thus leftists
who find Joe Manchin

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Manchin

too conservative should try primarying him out with a
leftist and see how much they like the Trumpist that will
defeat him, e.g.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Blankenship

or worse.

Trump just turned out all an all-time record number of
Republican voters and nearly won, and the Republicans
made progress in the House and probably saved the Senate.
The Republicans will make further gains in 2022 - the party
not in the White House usually does - and Democrats need
to start acting now to minimize the damage.

The Democrats can't make any progress until they control
the Senate, and to do that they have to restore their
historical reach in rural areas. Their national message
better reflect that.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/outlook/senate-states-republican-control/2020/11/18/571573e0-2915-11eb-92b7-6ef17b3fe3b4_story.html

The Greens and Libertarians have remarkable ideological
purity. On national elections, though, the Greens'
greatest successes were electing Bush in 2000 and Trump in
2016, while the Libertarians' was electing Biden in 2020.
Don't be like them, Democrats - be a party that can make
laws, not just a party of ideals.

Some lessons from the election.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/11/12/opinion/2020-election-voters.html

After 2016, it was possible to be discouraged but hopeful.
Voters would wise up once they saw what Trump was really
up to.

After 2020, it is easier to be discouraged and harder to
be hopeful. Record numbers of voters like Trump and
his enablers and what they do even if it is counter to
their interests.

 https://www.political-scrapbook.net/theory.html#political%20ideology%20for%20the%20masses

In retrospect, in terms of winning the 2020 election,
the Democrats' biggest mistake was voting for pandemic
economic relief. That made more new, low-information
voters feel better economically at election time, so they
voted for incumbents. The Republicans would never have
been so generous - their plan for Biden is scorched-earth,
in hopes of regaining Congress in 2022. But if the
Republicans succeed in getting the Democrats to act as
poisonously partisan as the Republicans, Vladimir Putin
will indeed have won the biggest victory of his career.
And so will Strom Thurmond, Newt Gingrich, and the rest
of the founders of the modern Republican Party.

Time for the annual continuing resolution circus

For the moment, Pelosi is opposed to bailouts for tobacco
farmers

 https://apnews.com/8c96c1481398cc34404750ced3a9b309

which Trump thought was in the bag

 https://www.reuters.com/article/us-health-coronavirus-usa-farmers-aid/u-s-details-up-to-14-billion-in-new-aid-for-farmers-idUSKBN269261

but it's probably negotiable. Although have you ever
heard of a Democratic tobacco farmer in the last 50 years?

What seems never to even get on the negotiating table is a
bipartisan agreement to pass clean unencumbered continuing
resolutions and debt ceiling lifting resolutions.
But budget grandstanding polls well with a lot of
low-information voters and fits the general political
requirement of passing big complex bills at the last minute
with very little inspection. That's how big donors get the
return on their investment. That's not just politicians
being irresponsible - it's politicians being responsive
to their major donors. Especially in an election year.

So what if Herman Cain, Kimberly Guilfoyle and Lenny Curry

You might be luckier! This convention was really made
for Vegas - a historic oversight.

Long term planning in a democracy?

That's practically an oxymoron. Most voters don't
think much longer term than next month's paycheck and rent.

It requires leadership to convince voters to put up
with short-term pain for long-term gain - and courage -
because unforeseen events might wipe out the promised
long-term gain.

Leadership? Courage? White House? Congress?
Talk about oxymorons!

 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/24/business/congress-coronavirus-stimulus-bill.html

What would it look like?

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Darkest_Hour_(film)

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_King%27s_Speech

Queen Elizabeth remembers the hours her father put into
preparing for his wartime radio broadcasts. Thus a man
of modest attainments ascended to courageous leadership.
But Trump doesn't plan or rehearse his daily virus rallies

 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/23/us/politics/coronavirus-trump.html

Churchill's courageous leadership led him to be thrown out
by the voters as soon as the war was over. But history
has been kinder to him than to Chamberlain.

Anybody would be forgiven for thinking they were extinct.

take advice.”

Massie is what Gingrich and Meadows and Jordan and Trump

Thank Trump for delivering the State of the Union Address

It's time to end the televised charade. It's entirely
up to Congress. Most presidents just sent a written

How to undermine the deep state - the people who have a
deep knowledge of what they're doing.

The shallow state polls better at Trump rallies because
Trumpists get their science from Fox.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/weather/2020/02/01/new-emails-show-how-president-trump-roiled-noaa-during-hurricane-dorian/

It's another form of deregulation - deregulating Federal
policy from deep science, facts, and logic - in favor of
Lysenko science.

Daring the president to actually make a deal instead of
just talking about it.

The major Republican investors aren't giving up any of
their tax breaks to fund infrastructure or anything else,
and they let their senators and representatives know that
loud and clear. Trump is the only one that might be able
to bring the Republicans in Congress along. But they are
much better at letting concrete proposals die of neglect,
while complaining about do-nothing Democrats.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/trafficandcommuting/house-democrats-unveil-760-billion-infrastructure-package--and-call-on-trump-for-bipartisan-push/2020/01/29/2656e2d0-42ce-11ea-b5fc-eefa848cde99_story.html

So the next Infrastructure Week will probably be a joke,
just like the last three.

Partisanship has been worse!

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preston_Brooks

But if Preston Brooks rose from his grave today, would
South Carolinians send him back to Congress with a fresh
supply of canes?

The Trumpists in Congress today are just as ferociously
partisan as their forefathers in 1856.

And just as corrupt as Aaron Burr - who never went to jail
and ended his career as he began, as a lawyer.

 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Burr

And lots of South Carolinians don't seem to have a problem
with Lindsey Graham.

Just like Vietnam!

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/afghan-war-plagued-by-mendacity-and-lies-inspector-general-tells-congress/2020/01/15/c65d0d46-37b5-11ea-bf30-ad313e4ec754_story.html

If you've forgotten about Vietnam -

 https://www.nytimes.com/1995/04/16/books/mcnamara-s-retreat.html

Another take from the book is that the Vietnam war was
about defending LBJ's Civil Rights and Voting Rights Acts
- the acts that finally broke the back of segregation
and launched the southern strategy that converted
Dixiecrats into hardcore Republicans, then Trumpists,
then Putinists. And what fearsome foe so concerned LBJ?
Senate Republicans, especially Goldwater, who would try
to ride any indecisiveness in Vietnam into a Republican
majority and repeal of the Civil Rights Act and Voting
Rights Act. Sound plausible and familiar?

He's planning to run for president in 4 years based on
his brilliant handling of Iran!

 https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/07/world/middleeast/pompeo-trump.html

Kansas senator was too small a prize for such a brilliant
strategist.

It might be a good idea for Pompeo to avoid foreign
airports, though, as the Iranians are no doubt well aware
of his role as architect of some of their grief.
