The Information Age has quickly become the Misinformation
and Disinformation Age.

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2021/12/24/covid-pandemic-uncertainty-bad-information/

Inventors of revolutionary new technology imagine only the
good things it will do for society and their pocketbooks.
It takes a different frame of mind to imagine and create
all the bad things it will do - and still benefit their
pocketbooks.

Distracted driving should be a violation.

 https://apnews.com/article/technology-business-lifestyle-games-video-games-a139b90962d90c5b8516da5cea459836

Enabling distracted driving should be a felony.

It should be possible to do everything necessary to drive
without taking your eyes off the windshield. It used to
be possible to adjust temperature and fan just by touch
of a dial. But it's cheaper to put that function into
the video display, which you have to have anyway to view
the backup camera.

Remember the great step forward when 029 keypunches
replaced 026? Remember your 33 KSR fondly?

And do you remember Steve Jobs raving comparing fractional
horsepower compute engines to a new industrial revolution?

 https://www.mercurynews.com/2021/11/11/computing-has-gone-full-circle/

As with all technology, the prophets failed to foresee
the criminal downside, or even how it would be legally
monetized.

That new industrial revolution was short-lived. Now just
about every programmable device you can touch is subject to
constant malware attack of all kinds. And it's constantly
sending data about you to - who knows where and for what
purpose?

So now we're back to cloud computing with terminals to
machines we will never see or touch. IT executives
prefer limiting terminal configurability to pre-installed
choices of background patters and font sizes.

Bipartisan agreement that SOMEthing should be done about
big tech.

 https://www.nytimes.com/2021/10/09/technology/facebook-big-tobacco-regulation.html

No bipartisan agreement whatever about exactly WHAT should
be done.

The Democrats want social media to ban false and
inflammatory content. GOP says social media discriminate
against conservative voices, which is modern Trumpist
Dixiecrat Republican-speak for false and inflammatory
content. This despite the fact that false and
inflammatory content on social media has done wonders for
Trump and Trumpism, far beyond anything it's ever done
for truthful rational debate. Actual traditional
conservative voices aren't suppressed but have essentially
no following on social media; they've been left behind.

The big tech lobby puts big pharma and big tobacco to
shame, and could bankroll as many big primary or general
election challenges as needed. Since Congress would have
to destroy the social media business model to make any
progress - don't expect much to change.

"the bad guys will come in and delete the backups or
encrypt them"

Maybe magnetic tape is still a better backup medium than
the cloud! The cloud disappears in an instant after a
natural disaster, or an artificial disaster.

It's getting worse

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2021/07/08/cybersecurity-202-kaseya-attack-is-revolution-sophistication-ransomware-hackers/

What you can do to avoid making it worse faster

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/07/08/ransomware-attack-avoid/

How the whole ecosystem works

 https://www.washingtonpost.com/technology/2021/07/09/how-ransomware-attack-works/

It's not going away - there's too much money involved.
Some of it is surely going to national governments for
"protection".

Paying ransom should be illegal, and if numerous
corporations go out of business, it will encourage others
to clean up their acts. Cyber insurance is likely to be
unaffordable soon.
